Hey Cat...long time no claw,Wrong? My dog, if I can list my musical machine mistakes...The original boxes I got with my 10" and 15" reds were respectively the little IIILZ sealed and big ported boxes. The IIILZ box with the little reds wa...

This there is the last in the “THE PROBLEMS WITH HORNS” cycle. The previous threads might be found at:
Problems with horns: tweeters.Problems with horns: mid-range horns.Problems with horns: mid-range drivers.
This would be probably the most contro...

Principally there are many many theories and papers about ports and how they must be calculated/constructed/placed/used. But none of these theories explains the relation of port design to the SOUND. That’s the reason why so many engineers get s...
The 1808 was designed for a large vented enclosure. Just looking at the TS numbers would indicate a large vented box to be best. It also worked well in horn loaded designs as well.
I did not says what it was desig...

{How big was my surprise when I learned what it was! It was my guitar, a regular acoustic guitar that when is it was left next to my sealed woofer towers inspected into my listening space those “ported harmonics”. }This reminds of something. I ...
The 1808 in a vented box produces some of the best bass I've ever heard. I know some have a beef with vented enclosures but when designed right the sound can be brilliant. I've heard plenty of sealed, vented, bandpass and ...

We all know how low-power SETs sound driving low-sensitively ported speakers. The Morons feel that it they have “enough volume” then their SET is good to go. Of course it is not the case and low-power SETs shell not driver dead speakers.
However, I ...

There is , of course, nothing misterious in the ported speakers and the sound exactly meets your description above. The mistery for me is the decision of the designers to use bass reflex. The large image can be, of course due t...

Romy, I thought the Ref3 mm-de capos sounded pretty good last I heard them. No idea if they are ported or not. I've been told the crossover is rather simple. To me, they did a good disappearing act. Probably expensive. For dece...

Aura made their 1808 driver in 80s and most of the 90s and it was wonderful. It had huge high-temperature neodymium magnet, unique magnet geometry with underhung 4" edgewound aluminum voice coil. It was the only 18-inch...

Not that it matters, but I can't remember if that speaker was originally ported or really "sealed". Some of the old drivers were actually put in "tuned boxes", for better or for worse. I understand that your objectives for this driver afford you a ...

because the few ones that come to mind (not ported but low sensivity) wouldn't fit your high requirements. That's why if you found some interesting monitors I'd like to know it, specially as a learning tool....

Rakesh, I moved your post to this thread as I feel it is more relevant here, I hope you do not mind. You ask yours the very same question that I ask myself. I do not have definitive answers to them:

Quotes from Romy in blue :I do not see that you imbedded into your plaster construction any tightening points from a stronger material. I mean: the holes in plaster – how strong you will be able to tight the bolts before the plaster will give up? Did...

Josh, I think that you touched more complicated subject then you think. Let me to explain why I feel this way. The fact that I advocate a dogmatic, religiously-stubborn, almost paranoid time alignment of the channels is not a secret. I do feel very c...

Thank you Rowuk for the explanations.
The Tannoy driver moves at 32 Hz, the passive radiator can only move at its tuned frequency - 30 Hz.

I understand what you are trying to say,...

I definitely know my direction and each step is logical. If someone can't understand, it is not my problem. But I'm always happy to answer any question.I've ended up with 4 way system.1. 20-40hz ported 21"2. 40-100hz GOTO 146 in 25hz spiral horn3. 100...

Well, Tannoy tuned all their 10" monitors to play reasonably well down to about 50 Hz. Their monitors I heard were all variations of ported, with some of their "newer" monitors (70's?) using the ports to create more apparent bass, and those monitors ...

Honestly there is not enough info here to make a usefull recommendation. If the drivers are going to be used from the 95hz crossover point up then you might not even have to worry about it if the Fs is well below that. I would not do it anyway since ...

For what I can understand, your system works as a treatment on the cones surface. In ported (bass-reflex) speakers some of the bass energy comes from the port. Should it be treated as well? Maybe since the sound coming from the port is not phase cohe...

Thanks for these amazing stories. My own "profound" experiences with audio playback (where I was moved by the sound) have always been related to acoustics/room. Sometimes it all comes together, and equipment that have no right to sound much better th...

Hello Romy and everyone, I am going to order a pair of 400Hz/1" tractrix horns from http://www.stereo-lab.de/tractrix.html to replace/compare with a pair of 500Hz TAD-like square mouth horns. These are to be used initially with the drivers that ...
|
Romy, I suspect that 200 Hz high-pass will be too low for that driver, even 2nd order, and almost certainly with just 6 dB roll-off. I think more like 500 Hz with 1st order, and might still require the coil.Yellow-type drivers take on and ...

...no sarcasm was meant, nothing to "read between the lines." Several people seemed quite impressed w/ 138s in DIYaudio thread early on, said no tweeter ever needed, best mids they ever heard in anything, etc. That was part of what prompt...

Hi again Romy. This is the thread I referred to above. It is in the Knowledge Tree section. What do youdefine as the melody range? You seemed to think the ported enclosure was OK in that thread and I aminterested in how I might implement the idea...

Good news for audiophiles Cessaro new speaker is active and all Components like DAC DSP Pre and Power are in the new cessaro ported DSP loudspeaker. You just need a transport like cheap LG Samsung to play Ultra high end Sound ??https://www.cessaro.de/...

Herman, I am glad that you feel better about sound from your midbass horns. I do not know what damage digital amps incur but even your experience of hating the sound of those horns to falling in love with them just after changing the amp do suggests ...

Yesterday I was working for a half day at the part of the house were my Altec 19 are sitting and just to keep myself entertained I set up the Altec 19 to play from my add-hog playback: Sony $30 DVD player, Yamaha C2A preamplifier and Yamaha B-2 power...

We now call those modeling lamps in our big stobes. I think that the analogy is even better considering your intentions.I personally feel strongly that high sensitivity is the correct path and that small ported woofers in a MTM box will fall short of...

That is certainly a new idea. Unless it is really easy to take it out and start over, I would not do it. I just have no idea whether or not it will work without making noise. I have always just used mathematical calculatio...
